The fact that Chris Bergson has been holding up in the New York jazz scene for about twenty years is obviously reflected in his refined guitar solos. On Bitter Midnight, however, he more often takes elements from the blues, soul and country canon that American music history is rich of, giving his own meaning to it. One time, the party sounds like Little Feat, other times like The Band or The Allman Brothers Band. The fact that baritone saxophonist Jay Collins (Gregg Allman) and trumpeter Steven Bernstein (Levon Helm) are taking part will not be a coincidence. Prominent roles are further given to poet Kate Ross, multi-instrumentalist Craig Dreyer and soul singer Ellis Hooks, who co-wrote three songs, although Bergson can also set up a proper vocal spell, lends his vocals to the title number and the Stax-styled Knuckles & Bones. Mint condition.
