Hittin' the Note

by Tom Clarke | Issue 69

Smoky flavors wafting from New York City up to the Catskill Mountains infiltrate the unfussy music of the Chris Bergson Band. Bergson's a spry, supple guitarist with an earthy singing voice and a blues-grounded heart. Bassist Matt Clohesy, Ollabelle drummer Tony Leone, and Gregg Allman Band members Jay Collins on sax and Bruce Katz on keys put down jazzy, soulful touches all over Bergson's second album, Imitate The Sun. "Goin' Home" goes right to the Big Pink home of The Band. The title track gets its legs slowly and then struts with an urban swagger. A surreal aura surrounds "Shattered Avenue," a pensive blues from deep in the core. Willie Dixon's "Down in the Bottom" offers the band a chance to get its funky bravura going, and a nice ragtime vibe drives "You've Been a Good Old Wagon." Keep a sharp eye on this guy.
