Blues in Britain

by Gordon Baxter | May 2011

The sounds of the Chris Bergson Band are largely rooted in the South on "Imitate the Sun", starting with the easy going, funky "Goin' Home" with its shades of Little Feat. Bergson is a very neat and tidy guitarist, and a great singer, and the band's sound is perfectly rounded out by the three man horns and Bruce Katz's keyboards. Most of the songs are Bergson originals, and the pick of these is the excellent "Hello Bertha" which opens like an old soul classic. Among the covers are a very nice reading of "Dust My Broom" which is served up Freddie King style, and the closing cover of Dylan's "Standing in the Doorway" which works much better than expected.

Chris Bergson has a terrific voice, and if he can keep coming up with songs like "Hello Bertha", the band will continue to go from strength to strength.
